Who is the best Batman? | Christian Bale The Dark Knight | Batman Dark Knight
Posted on January 31, 2008 in the Highly Anticipated, Movie Reviews, The Dark Knight | Batman Begins 2 category

Christian Bale is returning as his role as Bruce Wayne A.K.A. Batman in “The Dark Knight”, and I am very pleased, but it started to make me think. Who is the best Batman from the recent major motion pictures and how does Christian Bale stand up? The first Batman was played by Michael Keaton. At first most people didn’t think that he would do a very good job, but with the direction of Tim Burton, Keaton actually pulled of the Bat character quite well. The movie was made in the late eighties so most of the action scenes were quite raw and Keaton had to carry most of the scenes. This was a dark movie and this Batman played by Keaton was a dark and strong character, however most of the characters strength and uniqueness probably came from Burton.

So most actors could have done well as long as they followed Burton’s direction. Keaton also starred in the sequel “Batman Returns.” Keaton was not the best Batman because he was not as physically imposing as he should have been and wasn’t as intimidating as well. He did an average job.
Now onto Val Kilmer in “Batman Forever” and he was not the best Batman, but he also wasn’t the worst. He was over the top and not the right look for Batman. He had the body, but came off as fake and not realistic. Kilmer was cast wrong for this character and never really fit.
Next we come to George Clooney in “Batman and Robin.” Clooney was just not the right fit for this character. He was not tough enough, he did not come off as realistic and he didn’t have the body type to be Batman. The movie was also very fake and not believable at all. Clooney received the part because of his popularity at the time and was not the best fit for the role. Basically Clooney did however, fit perfectly for the movie they did make which was fake and overly done.
Lastly we come to Bale. When I first heard their was a new Batman I was a little disappointed because I felt one of my favorite characters and franchises would continue to be slaughtered, but after seeing Christian Bale as Batman in 2005 ’s “Batman Begins” I was extremely happy and relieved. Bale along with his costars created an atmosphere of believability. It was realistic and natural. Bale was a Dark character which I like to think Batman would be. He is also physically demanding, but shows some weakness and fear.

He is not invincible and shows how he thinks and what he is feeling. The struggle he creates within his characters profile is interesting and engaging. This Batman played by Bale is tough, vulnerable, smart, funny, and motivated. By far he is the best Batman so far and hopefully he continues his excellence in 2008’s “The Dark Knight” also known as “Batman Dark Knight”.

[…] 3: Christian Bale as Batman. Christian Bale is bar far the best batman. See post “Who is the best Batman?” written a few days ago. Bale is by far the most serious and realistic Batman. He has the body of an […]
this movie is going to so stupid i cant wait to see the dumbness
This is going to be the best thing that happened to the franchise EVER! The Joker is back!
i think michael keaton is the best batman he looks awesome…
…forgetting something…
Keaton’s Batman was a quantum leap for his time, 1989, flawlessly beat other movies on its age.
Well, Bale’s Batman is good, but many consider it as spidermanised batman.
I agree that Keaton’s batman was before his time I disagree without the statement of Bale being spidermanized. I actually think Bale’s batman is the most realistic yet which is in a sense the opposite of spiderman, because spiderman is much more unrealistic. I think that Bale’s batman is great because it take the opposite approach of the spiderman movies.
Its easy to ask or say who was/is the best Batman, but theres more depth to the character than just “Batman”.
Bale not only does a superb job as The Bat but he nails the Bruce Wayne character also, who is an intrical part of Batman.
Keaton was good because he does both with wit and a slight psycotic glint.
I hope they continue to make Batman movies like Begins!!
Clark Bartram from the Sandy Collora’s short film Batman: Dead End.
ya, i strongly disagree with the people who didnt like the new batman. i 100% agree with what was said about bale by the writer. bale was the best. dont get me wrong keaton was great but he was missing quite a bit of physique. he had the personality beside the fact that he was more a comedian rather than wity. same thing with clooney, he was so fake. kilmer came off as a depressed little emo boy. batman was not suicidal, he was full of revenge. you cant get revenge when your dead. people are immature who come onto websites like this and just talk stupid shit just to get a rise out of people. bale totaly nailed the role with his structure, his build and his personality. he wasnt a jackass, he wasnt a comedian. he was smart and rightfully boastful about it.i cant wait to see the new joker in action but i do have to say that i can almost guarantee jack nickolson’s joker performance will still kill heath’s role just because he had the face for it. and by the way just to add there is no way heath killed himself because of his role as the joker. he was depressed it happens. i mean common now people, owen willson tried to kill himself to and your gonna tell me his role in the wedding crashers made him wanna die. the man hasspent mass quantities of time with jackie chan of corse you couldnt get depressed from that there is no way. shit happens, try being in that persons shoes and then judge them. sorry i had to get that off my chest and onto the web.
I am glad you agree. I don’t want anybody to think I am saying that Keaton was not a good batman, but I do think that bale is better. Bale does have an advantage of having a better cast surrounding him.
Bale played Batman the best. His only flaw was his height (Batman is about 6′4″). Keaton was silly as Bruce Wayne. Wayne is a playboy who is cool and classy. Kilmer’s Batman was decent but his Bruce Wayne act was not believable.. Cloony’s Wayne was just but his Batman was not the true Dark Knight. Adam West was the best Bruce Wayne but his Batman was for kids only.
Bale’s Batman was demostrating how the Dark Knight came to be. Bale played the unpolished diamond and nailed it. I can’t wait for the next movie Dark Knight. Batman should be more seasoned this time around. More weapons and gagets should appear. Ledger’s Joker should be interesting. I hope the Joker is the homocidal maniac Bob Kane first introduced; A HAPPY KILLER without regret.
No Robin please..
People are jerks who come onto these sights and try to get a rise out of…blah blah blah.
The only thing that made any sense on here is that Nicholson will reside as God of the “Joker World”.
The rest of this is hilarious. This batman was emo, this little batman was funny, etc. You morons blab on & on.
Obviously, none of you are in the movie buisness or you would realize that direction is alot to all of what pushes the acting in these super-fan films.
The main TOPIC here is, who is the best batman??????
If we’re talking comics, we’re talking looks. You have to draw the character to perspective, OR ‘act to perspective. You then have to ‘cast’ to perspective.
Facts are, Bale is a pussy. His build is wimpy, and mainly, his JAW is wimpy. He’s never been in a fight in his life. They had to re-design the mask just to fit his petit, girly-at-best skull.
He is no tall, dark, seductive, drink of proverbial water, either.
Plus, I guarantee, none of you fat or scrawny losers, have any idea what working out or manliness, or seduction, or even what having class is.
You all bitch, cause your to chicken shit to be anything like what a person in the real world would be that would resemble the likes of Wayne.
Thats why none of you can see any of the others as the best.
ANYONE OF THEM IS BETTER THAN THAT DOUCHEY LITTLE BALE.
P.S. Waaaaaaaaaa wah. poor little Ledger. Yeah, its so easy to buy that the pathic killer we all want to see, was also a gay cowboy who cried all the time. So, yeah, lets all bow are heads for the “Brokeback Joker”.
you idiots.
P.S.S. Nerds aren’t the only one’s who like and account for comic fans like Batman. Batman wasn’t a nerd, so deal with it.
[…] Gary Oldman as the not yet commissioner Gordon. The wait is finally over. All of the debate over Who is the Best Batman, all of the questioning on how Maggie Gyllenhaal replacing Katie Holmes, will do, the in depth […]
To post in response to Beautiful Cheek Bones. The guys nothing but a fuckin douche bag who I doubt really has any idea what he is even talking about.
I’m sorry but this guy talks mad shit about Bale’s Batman, as well as all the fans of Batman in general as far as I’m concerned just to get a rise out of people. Saying that Bale isn’t dark is completely bullshit. Hey buddy why dont you go and check out The Machinist, American Psycho or any one of the other movies that he’s made where he’s been well, lets see, dark, brooding, etc. I’ll rest my case with that.
By the way why should we even have to compare whos the better Batman? Just like each iteration of the comic/cartoon/game, Batman/Bruce Wayne in some way shape or form changes. So it’s all about whos the best for that role with that material. Thats one thing our man Beautiful Cheek Bone did have right. Its all about the perspective.
To keep going with Beautiful Cheek Bones. I doubt this guy has any idea of what being a man is. As he obviously immediately relatied manliness to working out, seduction, and having class. Chances are this guy is either a scared shut in and has no idea or is a fuckin gym monkey who’s definition of class is abercrombie clothes and seduction = feeding a chick enough drink until she’s so loose that he can take advantage of her. Sorry bro but try and fire back. I’m a soldier in the U.S. Army, so just go ahead and talk some more shit about people in the real world that resemble the likes of Batman/ Bruce Wayne. I’m sorry but my sacrifices, what I stand for and the love of what I do define me and I know what its like. So does anybody else that stands behind a cause.
So to close up the rant, this next flick is gonna be awesome. Also go suck a testicle beautiful cheekbones.
P.S. Maybe if you had seen Brokeback Mountain you could have some credibility to talk shit about the movie, but you obviously havent.
wow… was that guy two posts ago drunk? I’m sorry sir but you sound like an asshole, especially the bit about Ledger. I believe you said
“Yeah, its so easy to buy that the pathic killer we all want to see, was also a gay cowboy who cried all the time.”
What a joke, that just proves he is a better actor; anyone who can go from crying gay cowboy to psychotic mass murdering clown and do it HALF as good as Ledger dose not need to show any more proof of acting ability.
As for calling the new batman “emo” and calling Bale a “pussy” only shows your immaturity. So what if he hasn’t been in a real fight? How would you know that? What does that have to do with his acting abilities? How does that at all relate to the topic? IT’S CALLED ACTING FOR A REASON.
I noticed that throughout your entire poorly written analysis of “the new batman”, you did not ONCE mention anything about acting ability, the duality of Bales two roles (he IS really playing two different characters) or spent any time at all comparing his performance with that of the other batmans.
Personally I loved Bale as batman and think that his portrayal of the dark knight is not only the best, but the most realistic. What you are asking for is a juggernaut, something inhuman and without emotion. Just because this Bruce, this batman, has human emotions does not make him “emo” or a “pussy”. If you want to prove your machismo then why don’t you go lift some weights and kill some brain cells… personally enough of mine died just reading your post.
ok so when did being a good batman depend on physical prowess, I think Keaton was easily the best batman, He was dark he didnt have to have change his voice evertime he was batman, and he just flat out looked the best, Im so sick of the idea that you have to be so muscley that your exploding our of your costume to fight crime
The sheer thought that someone would say that Tim Burton helped make the original Bat movies a success defies belief! The only good thing about The 1989 Batman was Jack “here’s Johnny” Nicholson and by all accounts his performance was mostly ad-lib-ed showing that his performance (which makes the movie just bareable) was nothing to do with Burton. Also, machine guns on the Bat mobile!?!? If you want to talk character then why would someone who had his parents robbed from him at such an early age, by a gun, outfit his car with high caliber automatic machine guns!!! How does that fit with the character?! Nolan is right on the money and any bat-movie before the Begins franchise sucked Killer Croc’s scaled cock. Sure, I’ll admit that as a movie fan and a Batman fan the latest movies are by no means perfect, but if you believe that the movies before the Begins and TDK films (from bat shark repellent, Jack “the choker” Napier, Danny fucking De-I Vito
(cont) this movie to the utter shit that is the work of Joel Schumacher, was anything other that a stain on the movie industry and the Batman universe as a whole then you are sorely lacking in the brain cell department. Also for the record I am and have always have been a huge Batman fan, not only that but I work out every day and although I am by no means a huge guy I am physically fit and by no means an over or under weight nerd, so before someone decides to generalize and start painting people with the same brush they should realize that Batman is a universal medium that everyone can enjoy and any one who thinks otherwise is clearly nothing more than an retard with the brain capacity that is the animated piece of shit that is Matt Hagen!!
PS Mark Hamill is and always will be the best Joker EVER!!!!!!!
By the way (and this is the last post for today, I promise) what beautiful cockbones failed to notice is he is one of these “jerks who come onto these sights and try to get a rise out of…blah blah blah”
I swear to God its just a very angry Tim Burton sat at his keyboard furiously typing away. The kind of loser who’s posting on sites like these at 3:26am and has no empathy when an actor with so much talent that, he can star in teen movies, “gay” cowboy movies and play a maniacal killer clown, dies is in my opinion sub-human!
bale’s the best. babyface go suck some dick, thank you very much. try reasoning with your brain, not your ass.
I believe that Bale did the best Batman/Bruce Wayne. I was never a fan of the Batman movies, but i watched quite a few, but when i watched Christian Bale’s Batman movies, i was captivated. I thought His performance was awesome. Also Beautiful cheeks, you seem a bit hypocritical. i have nothing really to say to you because everything i would have liked to say, has already been posted. ^_^
I want the purrrrfect Catwoman…
Any idea’s?
I was thinkin maybe an unknown actress who fits the part?
Or maybe write the part around somebody damn sexy like…
Cassie,
Megan Fox,
Shannon Sossamon,
Odette Yustman,
Or maybe a really sexy professional athlete like a kung-fu gymnast or something.
I dunno……….. Any thoughts?
In my opinion the best Batman I have seen is from a short film made by Sandy Collora called “Batman Dead End”. Check it on the web. This film captures in 7 min what I have been waiting to see brought to the big screen in terms of what a great believable costume should look like and an appropriately cast actor to pull off a tall, tough looking, square jawed looking Batman. They even edit his eyes so that you don’t really see them and ya don’t become too distracted by the obvious eye painting ritual that everyone who has played Batman has to undergo. BTW- Joker is played by Growing Pain’s “Boner” and he does a pretty fine job of it I’d say!)
Really disappointed with Bale’s new costume (especially the cowl)I prefer the suspension of disbelief to the silly looking neck guard that was required for more head turning (didn’t really notice Batman doing any spectacular shoulder glances actually)and the whole appearance is just too…black. The dark knight isn’t meant to be that literal, it is supposed to reveal the inner turmoil, chaos and rage that our hero has to deal with…didn’t really feel that in the film.
And for god sakes get that man a throat lozenge. Every time Batman said anything in that film I just cringed, while my wife bursted out laughing because it was so ridiculous.
Joker was thrilling too watch of course and Two-Face…Wow! Cool SFX but really did we need to bring him into the movie that early (if at all) just to kill him off (he did die right?)
With Ledger outta the picture I don’t know if Nolan will make another film. I think that’s just as well. I’d like to see a film that follows the comic a little closer- more Batman, less Bruce Wayne) More action and less need to spoonfeed audiences with useless dialogue and information. A film based on the graphic novel “Arkham Asylum” would be interesting or perhaps one that doesn’t focus on a main villain at all, but a strong, suspenseful detective story that deals with more mature themes and not something that’s trying to involve audiences of all ages. in my opinion its better to make a cult classic that some fans will deeply cherish, than to be just another opening weekend success that is here today…forgotten tomorrow.
You’re all f$$$$$ in the head. GO suck bales dick. This is your reality check, overreacting on the internet on who’s the best batman, pfft. You guys go get acting careers then.
I believe that Bales portrayal of batman and wayne are the best yet. The acting comes out naturally and you are sitting and watching and catching yourself thinking that you are actually watching the real Bruce Wayne. His acting and cast and director kick the arse out of all the other movies, and dont get me wrong i loved every single one when they came out. when i heard they were releasing ‘Begins’ i was thinking that this would either make the Batman world, or destroy it, and thankfully it made it!!!
lets hope to see more nolan and bale batman movies, as long as its dark, different and dangerous i will be lining up on release night with money in one hand popcorn in the other and a big “FUCK YOU BEAUTIFUL CHEEKBONES” t-shirt on, waiting to watch the next best batman movie ever!
and on the ledger subject, let the man rest in peace. He lived and gave us great entertainment, and then died, as any aussie will tell you “Such is life” we will never be as entertained watching another joker that cannot compare to his performance.
keaton is still the best batman he had a mysterious quality.. a mystery to him. he really made it feel like batman was his alter ego and he had the right voice as batman..bale would be my second choice.. i can def live with over kilmer and clooney..but he sounds stupid trying to do , well what would you call it .”the bat voice” not too mention i feel like when he is in the batsuit ..he is just bruce wayne in a batsuit..batman has to take on another personality like keaton did. i mean after all batman and bruce wayne are one man , but they are 2 seperate pesonalities..i dont really see the depth or drifference with bale
I’d like to see Christian Bale in a lycra batman suit, with or without pants on top
I just came from watching The Dark Knight. I thought it was great, and I will buy it when it comes out. I also thought Bale did an excelent job. My only complaint would be…”the batman voice”. I could hear him breathing heavily out of his mouth when he spoke and “the voice” just made it sound like he had a constant head cold, so he couldn’t breathe out of his nose. Other than that, fantastic. I am also a big fan of all of the batman movies and I even enjoy the TV series from the late 60’s.
*on a side note…batman isn’t just for the guys. I am a girl and I just so happen to love the movies.
1st - George Clooney
2nd - Michael Keaton
2rd - Christian Bale
4th - Val Kilmer
5th - Adam West.
i mean there are no best the first 4 movies didn’t have much action but the new ones do and gives more the idea of darkness but they changed the whole batman story in batman begins and the dark knight.

sorry but bale sucks ass, keaton is the best…
KEATON is the best BATMAN,and to BEAUTIFUL CHEEKBONES your the best MORON of all times, bwa ha ha ha ha(voice fron under ground )
Michael Keaton is the first (movie), best and only BATMAN there was, is and will ever be! btw: Jack Nick Nicholson is still the best Joker!
OK I DONT CARE WHAT U SAY!!! THE BEST JOKER WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE ISSS LATE HEATH LEGDER (RIP) AND THE BEST BATMAN EVER!!! IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE IS CHRISTIAN BALE… luvv them both
Bale, Ledger.-> 10/10
I think that Michael Keaton’s the best, followed by Bale. Keaton’s the original, who had the looks & fitted the role perfectly. Remember we have to consider that the 1st 2 Batman were in the late 80’s & early 90’s. Bale is good, but not better than Keaton. Ledger was excellent as the joker.
