“No Country for Old Men” Ending Misunderstood
Posted on February 11, 2008 in the Movie Reviews, Movies Still Out and Still Good, Movies You Should See category

I saw this movie after reading some reviews that painted a picture of disappointment in my head about the ending, and I have to say that those reviews were wrong. I am not going to give a synopsis of the movie but rather focus on the ending. In many peoples opinion the ending was horrible. It didn’t resolve anything and just left the plot up for more questions. The people with that opinion are not necessarily wrong. Instead I would say to those people that they are looking at the movie from the wrong point of view. The director chose the title, “No Country for Old Men” for a reason. That is what the movie is about. Throughout the movie there is many action scenes, deaths, and battles and the patron tends to get rapped up in that plot line.

They start to think there is a hero and a bad guy, and the hero must win in the battle with the bad guy. That is not what this movie was intended to depict. Throughout the movie the older sheriff is given the chance to catch the murderer and he doesn’t. The murderer thinks in more modern terms therefore stays one step ahead of the sheriff, and all the other men chasing him. At the end of the movie the retired sheriff delivers a speech about a dream he had. In that dream and throughout the movie we see symbolism that he doesn’t understand the world he is living in and he recognizes he doesn’t understand.

He can’t figure how the world and the way people live have changed so much, since he was young. The things he valued are not the same things as people now value. The drug dealers, the killings, and the ruthless murderers are just examples of how the world and the country have changed and the nation is definitely, “No Country for Old Men.”

just saw no country for old men; it’s unassumingly unconventional and yet (thankfully) never over the top. a bit morally dumbfounding, but that can be a good thing… all in all the Coen brothers deserve their Oscars, well done indeed.
I absolutely loved the film. Every second…
Yes… Even the ending!
It is a whole piece of work, not just a film with a beginning, middle and end.
Isn’t it refreshing to have a film that doesn’t have the ending that people expect. For me, this heightened the whole experience.
It leave us asking questions and making images in our heads of what happened to Javier Bardem’s character? Is there actual closure? Are we meant to be left wanting more?
I was literally spellbound with this film and it is arguably one of the most original films, by way of presentation, artistic approach and overall feel.
I think the only way it may have had a more mainstream ending, would have been by hearing Tommy Lee Jones dialogue while seeing Javier Bardem walking off into the distance.
That said, I have to give this film 10/10.
It is a superior piece of film making that must be seen by anyone who likes deep and provocative thought.

I enjoyed this film but I wanted to see the good guy win and the bad guy die.
